Well, you can get Epi Explorers for $150-$300 pretty regularly...I would REALLY look at an Ibanez Destroyer. You can find 'em on ebay for well under
$500 if you keep an eye peeled and they're fantastic guitars, especially the japanese DT420. I've had two of them...really top notch guitars. Here's
one of the ones I had, came with gold Seymour Duncans and the HSC for $375.

Custom #1 (superstrat), Custom#2 (korina superstrat), Custom #3 (neck-thru dragonburst LP), Carvin Ultra V, Ibanez RX240, SX STL50, Agile HEA-65,
Hamer Californian (w/OFR)
Mesa Dual Rectifier Tremoverb Combo w/ Mesa 2x12 Cab
Assorted effects (ISP Decimator, Custom Shop BB Preamp, Polytune, MXR Carbon Copy, MXR Classic Distortion, Crybaby 535Q, Dan Electro EQ)
Acts of kindness: Pratteman!

Yeah, it ain't too shabby... Here's a couple more in red, with and without a whammy bar;

Actually, I prefer the headstock on the Floyd-less one, but really dislike string-throughs... Guess I won't be buying one any time soon.

If you're looking for a cheaper option, just to see if the style is right for you, Hamer makes an Explorer copy for pretty cheap.
http://adirondackguitar.com/electrics/slammer/SLAMMERXPSTANDARD.htm
Not an exact copy, but at $220, it's not too bad.

Sadly, living where I do, I've never had an opportunity to try a Kramer (they never caught on with the guitarists around here ). However, I do kinda like a couple of the new Kramer models;
http://www.kramerguitars.com/Striker.aspx (trans black w/FR)
http://www.kramerguitars.com/Vanguard.aspx
And they're not overly expensive, either.
Anyway, sorry about the GAS...

There are a few things I'd email Dennis about.
-Solid Wood body
I have no idea what kind of wood we're talking here, but your odds are good that it's basswood or alder. This isn't a bad thing, but just check.
And check to see if it's bolt-on or set neck.
Otherwise, I hope to see a NGD from you!

Double posting here, sorry.
Look into this one, too.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Highlander-Explorer-Style-Guitar-BEAUTY-/150471338807?cmd...
I think someone here got a Highlander Explorer recently, and I want to say it was oldpainless.
Just do a search. I think it turned out to be decent.
