7/6/2010 - Need your input for AGF3.0
Okay, so while it may seem like 3.0 has been forgotten the last two months and my upgrade deadlines have passed, I assure you it is not due to me
being lazy.
To enhance the AGF experience I've been working on moving it to a mybb forum software platform which has many more features than the current XMB
software it is running on. My problem is the database is so huge at this point that the conversion to mybb is never fully successful.
I have been able to get everything converted without issue except for the .5 million posts.
So, these leaves us with two options...
1. Convert everything possible and proceed with the new software and take our current posts and lock them in time at http://archive.agileguitarforum.com
or
2. Don't change anything and keep it running as it currently is.
I would have to say i prefer option #1 as it will give us more room to grow and add on features. If we go with option #1, I might even consider going
with vbb (not free and has a annual license fee, but many more features)
what do you guys think?

If you move it, you need to start fresh and archive. This forum is very unique, but do what you need to do!

Being that I am old (not really) and set in my ways I am always
reluctant to change. However, if changing the forum is going to
enhance the already great experience I enjoy here then I'm all

works. I will be here no matter what you choose to do.

In the scheme of things, like Gplayer said, it's your call.
Half a million posts probably aren't too many in a whole and if any are deleted that were the more important ones such as "project depot" specifically
mods and upgrades, those forumites rpobably wouldn't mind reposting them or they may be relieved that they were deleted.
I say it's time to upgrade ( with more emoticons ) and i personally wouldn't
mind paying an annual fee for the newer format.
Would the fees be donationed or fee based admission into the forum?

option #1.
can you just convert posts newer than a specified date then archive the old stuff? This might eliminate the .5 million posts causing the errors?

The nice side benefit is that it will deter the nebies that come in and resurect ancient threads to boost their post counts

Definitely #1, but have you considered how will this affect (effect?) the post count requirement for Klaatu's Corner?
Also, have you considered phpBB2? I haven't run or installed a forum in quite some time, but I always liked it.

Option 1 is fine. The important thing is that the old posts are archived. If the new platform is easier for you to manage, has more features, and is a
better choice for the future, it's a no-brainer
That said, I'm fine with either option.

No fee for users, just me if people wanted to donate, that would be available,
but not required. I'm not looking to suck money from the users.

Just curious as to why the post migration is failing? If it's strictly due to the size of the db, I'm wondering if you could create a handful of
smaller databases, each containing a smaller number of posts to be used for the migration?
Have you tested a full migration to a test instance of vBulletin? If so and that was successful, I'm sure many would donate to help cover the license
costs of that software.
A completely separate archive could get ugly / cumbersome for quite some time, but if that's what it takes, you gotta do what you gotta do.

I prefer #1. My only concern is that archiving the forums separately will affect Google search results. As it stands now, there are quite a few
rondo models where the only reviews and info to be found in a search resides on the agf forum. For many of us, including myself, this is just a fun
place to be, but a lot of the newer members seem to be arriving here via search engine.

does two different databases (new vs archived) make it more hack prone? just a thought. Is it possible that picture posts in threads is responsible
for the massive crash? I mean text is not that DB heavy, but pictures and BBcode can get heavy quick I would think. Anyway, nobody knows better than
you do, so I support number 1 and the computer science student in me says an upgrade is always a good proactive stance to take.

Go with #1. Not sure how many people realy are doing search, because how many threds do we start a week on GFS vs. Guitar Heads as an example. The
good thing is that it gets new people involved with older members and helps them become part of the comunity. Other forums you would get the "Do a
search newbe" type of comment.
