Trying to decide between the two. Is there anyone who has either\both and could give me a brief pros and cons.

What am I to gain with a 3rd P90, is it just going to be louder?

Since I am a beginner to guitar setups, will the stop tail model be easier at all then the tremelo setup?

    thanks
    Kevin

The third P90 just gives you a few tone variations, not a loudness difference. The one closest to the bridge is going to be brighter, closer to the neck "rounder" and "smoother". With 3 pickups, you get 5 variations of tone. With 2 pickups, you get 3 variations of tone. Not a huge difference either way. A matter of taste.

Some people don't like a third pickup, because they feel it gets in the way of picking. Others love it.

Simplicity is the best way to go as a beginner in my opinion.
I would go with a stop-tail and 2 pickup version of these guitars.
    Again, just my opinion.

A stop tail is easier, no doubt. But a jazz master tremolo isn't hard. It just requires a few steps to get it working well. However, even if you set it up horribly, it'll still hold your strings just as well. Here's how to set one up http://www.webrocker.de/jaguar/cms/2007/05/12/setup-the-tremolo-system/

I would prefer the tremelo model, but I have read some bad things about the quality on the SJM-62 tremelo setup. A few posts where people are talking about doing surgery on it (ordering different parts, drillling holes, rubber cement etc). I wouldnt mind learning how to learn certain aspects of guitar modding\setup. I just dont want to buy something that will be out of my league as a novice.

SX Liquid RN 3P90 Stop 3TS. The stop-tail keeps it simple and provides better tuning stability. Upgrade the tuners and nut and you will have a wailing guitar.

SX Liquid RN 3P90 Stop is what I own

    Really like it.

Like the extra tones with the third pickup
    and 5 way switch.

The tremolo itself is fine IMO. Some people may eventually change the one spring that tensions the tremolo. Very easy mod that anyone with a screwdriver can do. As for drilling etc, there has been a popular modification since antiquity where the floating bridge on the Jazz Master was changed for a Tuno-matic. However, the SJM/Liquid comes standard with a Tunomatic already. Plus the saddles are roller type, which eliminates the binding that can happen on standard saddles. You shouldn't have any need to modify this area of the guitar to make it play well. :bigthumb:

While the stop-tail versions are NO DOUBT good sounding guitars, probably no different from a stop-tail strat, IMHO the jazzmaster-style trem contributes to the unique surfy sound (if that's what you like). I have 3 SJM's (same thing technically) with trem and although I do my own setups, I didn't need to do anything to them - they work fine. I don't use the locking feature, because I don't break strings ;)

So, if you think you like the tone of Jazzmasters and Jaguars, go with the trem. It can still rock with a lot of drive, in fact, those P90's RAWK!

My guess: those inconsistencies with SJM trems were from older batches.

But the good news: you won't go wrong either way.
